Rice Helpful in Fight Against Allergies
Posted on June 30th, 2009 in Health News by James Parker

Scientists in Japan have attained towards the next generation of heritably modified rice, which will fight allergies.

According to report in Live Science and safe studies in animals, the new transgenic rice has been considered to fight a common pollen allergy.

Fumio Takaiwa and colleagues note that the first generation of genetically-modified crops helps to keep crops free of weeds and bugs. This consists of vegetables and grains that produce a number of nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, medicines and vaccines.

Researchers are worriedly trying to determine whether foods produced from these “biopharmaceutical” crops will be safe for humans and the environment. The rice plant has been genetically engineered to fight allergies, affects about 20 percent of the population.

In laboratory studies, the researchers fed a steamed version of the transgenic rice and a non-transgenic to a group of monkey for 26 weeks and the test animals did not show any health problems so in an initial demonstration that the allergy-fighting rice may be safe for consumption, according to the researchers and tests.
